probably what actually needs done, to fit with existing logic and the order things happen in the installer, is to always mark the partition selected for root as "active", which will trigger it getting marked appropriately by the partition setup stuff already in place.
The only problem is, when you do multi-boot, you find the installer would override your preference by marking the partition you don't want active, as active. Perhaps such logic would be worth it if a drive has no active partitions marked? The GUI sort of does it anyway, if you select a partition to be root or boot it will tick the active flag, and then it's up to you if you don't want this.
