On my multiboot machine, I booted into my MX21 KDE partition for the first time since 13 June 2024.
After boot up and the plymouth splash, everything just went black. SDDM login window just didn't appear. I tried rebooting into the default 5.10 kernel [prior to that I booted with the AHS 6.1 kernel], but no success.
Then I rebooted into my MX23 partition to do an update of MX21 KDE via chroot rescue scan, and towards the end of the terminal output, I saw this message:
This was puzzling, since the sddm themes I had in MX KDE was the MX default, plus some themes which I had installed from KDE store when MX21 was still new, and all of which I had tested successfully. I don't update these themes at all, as I have experienced how some sddm themes made for newer Plasma versions are just not compatible and break/crash. Though in the past when I tested incompatible themes, the crash always triggered the [ugly] breeze fallback theme so I could still log in.
The only thing I might change when I switch among these sddm themes would be the background/wallpaper used by the sddm theme. I've never had issues with that.
Anyway, I thought that since the error message said it had switched back to the breeze fallback theme, I should be good.
I rebooted into MX21 KDE but the black empty screen is still there. No login page. In other words, I can't get into the desktop.
I am requesting help on this. I'm sure there is some plasma config file I can edit [or delete?] to perhaps switch back to the default MX sddm theme. Or maybe a command to run to actually force sddm to run the breeze fallback theme?
I looked at /home/tuaz/.local/share/sddm
but it was an empty text file.
No QSI of MX21 KDE, but here is the hardware details from the MX Workbench (21) iso, which I'm booted into - details should be similar except for the AHS repo, I think:
