I go thru the procedure mentioned because I always want to boot with SYSTEMD, which is not the default. Could this be my problem ?

Uncheck save last boot option box and try again. I default to booting this entry "MX 23.3 Libretto, with Linux 6.9.10-1-liquorix-amd64 (systemd)"
Good advice. The reason why it works also after kernel upgrade
to boot into the new kernel with systemd is b/c:
The currently selected will be saved in a way
that grub sees the position of the menu entry with the grub menu.
And with this the position within the Advance sub menu for
the latest kernel is always the same, even after kernel upgrade.
