I did try a persistent USB session of MX 23 XFCE. But I can't adjust the brightness of the LCD at all. Not even by using the Intel driver that you can activate with MXtools. This used to work with MX 19.4 in both KDE and XFCE.
The second thing is that the laptop has 2 shortcut keys for controlling the volume. One with FN keys and the other is a volume key it has over the keyboard.
I have a new Samsung Sata SSD that I plan to use once I know everything is working right. And the keyboard is not the issue because I still have MX 19.4 KDE installed and all keys work fine. I would leave it at 19.4 KDE if I could, but since it doesn't get updates I can't. The laptop would take a little while to boot but once it did, it has actually quite snappy performance. It's comparable to Windows 7. The OS that came with it.
