I have used XFCE since I started using Linux. I usually set up 4 work spaces One is my every day things.Another is where I play with programming. Others are for momentary tests.
NB: The doctors say I have essential tremors. My hands and fingers shake. I can no longer read my own writing and I've found my left hand is not as shaky soIuse it for the mouse.

#1 When my finger touches the center scroll wheel on the mouse and the cursor happen to be on the back ground (usually is!), .it switches me to another work space!
#2 If I try to open another copy of an app, especially Firefox or Geany, it will either move the already open one to this work space or switch me to that work space.

Would one of the other DEs isolate the work spaces? Or not keep jumping to other work spaces?

Bruce
