Requesting assistance:
About a week ago MX-linux began not showing thumbnails for some of my photos and videos in Thunar. Most photos do correctly display a thumbnail. Only some do not. This is NOT a video-driver issue because it occurs on only one account (regular user), and persists on different hardware.
This is occurring on a LIVE-USB (persist) installation of MX-21.3 (64) that has been working fine for months.
“Show Thumbnails” setting in Thunar is correctly set. Thumbnail size limit is set for unlimited size. Files that don’t show thumbnails are all LOCAL. There is ~6 Gb free space on the 32 G drive. I did an fsck. I tried turning OFF “show thumbnails”, rebooting, and then turning it ON again - no joy. If I edit & save the file under the same name, it does not affect the thumbnail display state. However, if I save the file as a different name, the copy SOMETIMES displays a thumbnail correctly.
Refreshing the file manager folder display does not correct the thumbnail state.
After freshly booting, if I open a folder containing image files, many will show a generic icon instead of a thumbnail. For SOME of the images that DO show a thumbnail in Thunar at first, when I select them the thumbnail immediately goes generic and remains so for the entire session. Others continue to show the thumbnail image after selection, as usual. Thumbnails that “blink out” thusly reappear after reboot, and again disappear for the session if re-selected.
All image and video file types appear to be affected, but consistently inconsistently - that is, malfunction appears to be occurring with random files, NOT selectively-completely for a particular type or types.
I have not seen it occur with any non-image non-video file types, but that may be because I don’t have enough of those. It occurs to about ? 20% ? of image files, but 90% in some folders and 0% in others. I can discover no pattern such as older or newer, or larger or smaller being more affected.
All actions on all files still work normally - eg copy, move, edit - without error messages or malfunctions. No other kind of access is inappropriately denied, only thumbnails.
Icons for the affected files display correctly within specific apps with file-bars or pick-boxes such as evince.
The only thing I can think of that may have caused this issue was a complete system crash while copying files to a backup drive using a root thunar window. But I did not notice the malfunction for days after that. Rebooting and restarting/finishing the backup went normally, no error messages. But this is not occurring on the target of that backup, its occurring on the source files.
If I log in as root/admin ALL files are correctly thumbnailed.
So I believe it is a permissions issue, but I have no idea how to diagnose it or correct it. All permissions for the affected files are correctly set (user:rw group:ro other:ro).
Any ideas how to identify the location (thumbnail storage?) or function (a thumber-demon?) that is incorrectly permitted or otherwise bent? Other similar problems found online involve a util called tumblr, but do not have applicable solutions.
If I sound like I know what I am talking about in any of the above query, do not be misled. I don’t. I am just trying to describe a situation I don’t understand with language I believe to be specific & intelligible. I won’t be able to understand DEV-ish or GEEK-ish.
Thanks for reading.
