Pls excuse my incorrect terminology. I have a lot to learn.
I initially said :
"the boot option in bios is blank (just a white cross hatch grid)."
you reply, which I totally understand:
The entry you may see which boots into "MX Linux" is the one special "fallback" UEFI entry, which is
dynamically added (at every boot) to boot from a "drive" where a ESP (EFI System Partition) was detected
and the shown label is sometime not properly dynamically generated."
So, my understanding is that the boot options entry is not being properly dynamically generated and the fall back label EUFI entry shown is the blank or cross hatch that I see, rather than "MX Linux" which I expect to see.
This is OK because I only have one OS on the hard drive. so I know that the blank option is MX linux i.e. the one I want and the only one I have on this drive.
Suppose, hypothetically, I put another, maybe 2 or 3 more OS on the hard drive, then if the fall back EUFI entry for each is a "blank", i would have no idea which entry to select or boot from.
I could (and I will) follow the steps you outlined to manually add the corrected entry (MX Linus versus blank/cross hatch) and this could be repeated if there was more than one OS on the drive. (Don't worry, after trying many different linux distributions, MX Linux is definitely the best, and I won't be adding any other distributions to the drive).
But, my question b4 I proceed to try to "manually add the efi-file from the ESP....... by selecting on the ESP....", is where is this ESP? Once I F2 into bios with password and secure boot temporarily on, is this ESP going to be visible somewhere so that I can select the efi-file from it?
OK> Maybe I am convincing myself this is going to be difficult. The best way to learn is to try, so I will go ahead and try. Will get back to you, either with a big smile :-) or a frustrated frown {:-(
